The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
