RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
