The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
